More questions! I have a stage one thats done a clutch, but the motor is very very tired and gutless..Ive had a tune done, electronic ignition etc etc but still very lame, its got RR high range gears, so need and want some grunt.. I was ready to go ahead with a rebuild on the 3.5 for about $6k with a mild cam.. now im thinking a second hand P76 or 3.9.. any thoughts, it will only be a weekend car but I need it to reliable..will be carbies not efi..Cheers Brainstrust!

Summitt,
I have complete P76 and Rover 3.5 engines for sale - see the relevant area in Marketplace. I'm in Melbourne but I'm sure we can organise transport...

I would fit a 3.9 into your Stage One if you have one. I fitted a rebuilt 3.9 into my Stage One Truck Cab about 6 years ago and have been very happy with the performance of this engine coupled to the existing stage One running gear. It is a straight swap and retains the look of the original vehicle engine bay.
I rebuilt the original 3.5 heads and covers on mine but I did fit a performance inlet and exhaust manifold along with a 450 Holley and a performance camshaft. It sounds great and has plenty of power. I also fitted electronic ignition to. Once you do it though you will need to probably overhaul your brakes as this becomes one of the weak links in the performance of a Stage One that goes fast in my opinion.
Super fun to drive though and it is amazing how many people want to chat to me about it when I am out and about.

P76 are so old now that parts are almost non existent.
Even the replacement parts like 253 pistons are obsolete.
Many of the very old blocks are porous.
Even 20 years ago people in the Range Rover club were removing them due to problems.
I would therefore recommend a 3.9/4.0/4.6 if you can find one.
Even those engines are now obsolete and out of production for years.
To me a modern engine like a gen 3 with a very mild tune would be the go.
I would bet that 99% of punters would not tell the difference on looking if it had a carb but then injection would be so much nicer.
