As noted above, there are different widths and offsets. Why are you looking to use S2 wheels? Note that these rims will be tubed type, not tubeless. What wheels were on the S3 when you bought it? Whilst Limestone was the standard colour for wheels, I am reasonably convinced that mine (which is a late S3 in Spanish Olive) left the factory with the optional wider rims in silver. I am going through the same exercise as you in trying to find a period looking tyre in the correct size. Tubed 7.50 x 16s are available but they are typically Light Truck tyres. As I'm not intending to use the SWB for off-road, I'd prefer to keep my teeth in my jaws and not use 12 ply tyres...

1974 wheels (in Australia) should be the same as Series 2/2a, and limestone, but late S3 were silver, but to the best of my knowledge were the same width, although the 5.5" may have become standard on 88s - but late 88s in Australia are quite rare, as by then most new buyers got 109s.

Guys this is superb assistance, I genuinely greatly appreciate the advise. Some tyres I found that are exactly what I am looking for are the Firestone Wilderness Jeep Service, 7.5x16.. they are available in Sth Africa, so no idea if / how to get them
Here, but they are the goods... the Toyota skinnies look rather similar..

Thanks too for for the help on the screws for the transmission plate .. question is, was there one or two plates on the bulkhead?? If my memory serves me right, I think I have seen Aussie cars with two plates side by side.. anyone have a photo of exactly what plates my 74 built car should have???

    Cheers

Visit a couple of tyre shops and ask.....
They have lots of suppliers they can get onto for tyres, that's how I got my Road Track Majors, I told them the vehicle it was for and that crossply was OK and they found that there was a batch of Dunlop RTM's being made.
From memory the spare I have fitted was 6-ply made in Australia and the 4 new ones were 8-ply made in Malaysia.

It will depend on the staff at the shop and how interested they are in solving your problem so try a couple and see what they come up with.

    Hello from Brisbane.

The colour scheme changed sometime in the late 70’s - the limestone wheels and hardtops went when the body colours changed, side panels matched the rest of the body and upper panel changed to white, and rims went to silver.

That was when the yellows went to the darker tone (don’t know which is Camino Gold vs Bahama Gold) and Spanish Olive replaced the earlier lighter green colour. This was at the time that Leyland decided to have similar colours across its local vehicle range.

I know it was before 1979 or thereabouts because I remember seeing a new 88” wagon at the dealer in Port Lincoln that was in the new colour scheme. Often wondered where that truck got to and what shape it’s in now.

    Cheers,

    Brilliant feedback, thank you.

Can anyone confirm by photo from an original 73/74 car what transmission plates were on the firewall for Aussie cars? Reason to ask is I have seen single plates in the uk, and (I think- from grainy photos) double side-side plates here in Australia.

    Cheers

    Hello from Sherwood.

There are normally three plates on the firewall.

One is the build plate with serial numbers etc. A second is the transmission use plate with the low-high-4WD instructions etc. The third is a smaller Pressed Metal Corporation build plate.

The style of the first two plates is unique to Series 3 trucks.

I’m a bit surprised if UK Series 3 do have different plates - other than the PMC plate. Any that I have seen were the same as those on my Australian built truck.

I can send you a photo if you PM me or post one up later - using my phone here and donÂ’t know how to upload photos from it.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    ThankS Neil!

I don’t know how to PM on this system. Have clicked on the name section and there appears to be no ability to pm, or post pictures. Can anybody help me ?

Also, I’d like to contact the chap that posted on the super traxion Sta tyres, but I can’t see how to respond.

Please help me on this point
