    Gear Lever

My Series 3 gear lever is of the type that has a nylon bush (missing on mine see - photo) fitted on the end that goes into the selectors - does anyone know if the bush is available as a spare part, it is not listed in the parts catalogue. Or is there another solution people have used? Thanks!

Might be non-replaceable Land Rover FAQ - Repair & Maintenance - Series - Drivetrain - SIII Shift Lever Nylon Bushing Failure Repair

Maybe look for a secondhand replacement from an earlier model or machine a metal replacement and weld into place as per above article.

    Hi WesternTerra.
Try the 'O' rings, as I suggested on FB.
All they do is dampen metal to metal noise, from what I see.

Some use an O-ring (which disintegrates) but the shape of the end is much different.

The one in the picture by westernterra is very different, same as below.

    I don't think O-rings will work.

    Hi Colin.
My new Bearmach one I put in Gilbert, was the same as the image.
It had a very soft rubber band. He selects gear lovely.
The rubber band is much softer than an 'O' ring.
Why couldn't you add 3 or so over the end ?

I guess you could but would the O-rings sit reliably side-by-side and how long will they last.

I'd be looking for an early gearstick.

How about multiple layers of shrink wrap tubing to make up the diameter?

Thanks for your suggestions everyone - I am trying (for now) a hardish rubber grommet(see photo)that has the right inside and outside diameters - a bit harder than an o ring but still enough flex to fit over the lever. It works ok - will be interesting to see if it lasts. This is the first time I have come across a part that I haven't been able to get a genuine or after market direct replacement part for. Also seems that not many of this style of gear lever are around so not sure when it was introduced.

Reading the article in the link in post #2 the Land Rover involved was early 80's.
Problem is that the diameter of the two sections of yours is smaller than the ball on the metal ones so if/when the bush collapses there is a lot of play and it can get stuck.
I understand the original was nylon and revolved, once the grease dries out, dirt builds up and it stops revolving the wear starts.
How is the end section held on ? The nylon must have been fitted then the end piece added.

I don't have an old to compare to but I think the diameter of the 2 'flange' bits is about the same as the ball on the older style one - I had a couple of things going wrong - the missing 'bush' and the spring holding the lever had become dislodged - only symptom was occasional getting momentarily stuck between shifts - that's when I pulled it apart to fix. With regard to the lever itself it is all one piece so I cannot see how the original bush could have been fitted
