    Instrument dashboard cabling

    Hi

I was just wondering whether anyone knows or have experience or knows how long roughly it will take to check the instrument dashboard cabling.
I am trying to get quote to check the cabling so I know roughly I get a reasonable quote.

    Thanks
    Gus

What are you checking for ? Is there a problem ?

The wiring is very simple, colour codes are British Standard but I guess it depends on the person you contract to do the job. Wiring diagrams are readily available.

Lucas wire colour codes for Land Rover

Fairly straightforward to do it yourself with a test light or meter. You might need to make up a long cable with an alligator clip so you can attach to one terminal and have the test light or meter some distance away at the other end of the wire.
Anyone quoting is likely to give an hourly rate, especially if they have no experience of a Series III.

Maybe contact blknight.aus on the forum.

Thanks. Looks like previous owner didn’t use the right colour cable but I will give it a go.

I have a few questions and anyone might be able to help.

    1. Switch No8 (panel light switch), on the diagram there are only 3 cables should be going to the switch but on the dash connection there are 5 cables. I couldn't the purple and purple white on the diagram.

    2. Anyone can tell me the location on the dash the switch no 25, 37, 40, 45 and 46.

    Thanks.

    1. May have been modified, any extra gauges ?

    2. They are not in/on the dash.
25 = Headlamp flash on the indicator stalk
37 = Stoplamp switch on the brake pedal assembly
40 = Cold start warning light on the choke cable
45 = Oil pressure switch on the engine
46 = Cold start thermostat on the engine

    Thanks Colin

Does the panel switch controlling instrument lights?

Do you know what number on the diagram the warning choke light? The choke light is ON when I switch on the panel light and there is a bulb alway ON when I put the key can move position 1.

    Thanks again

I have a slightly different wiring diagram to you, also mine is a diesel so I may be wrong with some of the following :-

On the diagram the headlight switch powers the instrument (panel light) switch. If the lights aren't on there is no power to the dash lights.

When you turn the ignition on the choke light will come on if the choke is out or it could be the switch on the cable is stuck or needs adjustment.
The oil pressure light and ignition light will also come on until the engine is running.

I thought the choke light only came on when the choke is out and only when engine gets up to temperature to remind you to push the choke in.

    Yes you're right.
Mine being a diesel conversion has had the choke light wired to the glowplug circuit.
