    Good evening.
Are the two seals interchangeable on the hubs, Did the hubs change, What does the outer spring do, on the second seal ????
    First, pre 1980 S3 hub seal RTC3510.
    Second, post 1980 S3 hub seal RTC3511B

The garter spring helps the lip keep in contact with the stub axle collar, the outer lip is to stop dirt/water getting in, the inner lip stops the grease getting out and also water/dirt getting in.

Most of the seals I've used have the main inner lip with garter spring and a small outer lip to help stop dirt/water getting in.
Steer clear of the low cost Britpart type, they seem to be hard and don't seal very well, I've just replaced several because of oil getting into the brakes.

I've been getting them from a local bearing supplier E231.335.31
