The vehicle takes on the identity of the chassis number. So if you swap chassis (with the number stamped on it), the vehicle effectively becomes a series 2A.
Hi All,
I am right at the start of my Series III (1977 109") restoration project and have a chassis question.
The SIII chassis needs a fair amount of work so I am looking at replacing it.
I have found a 'rust free' SIIa chassis and I believe the two are very similar.
The question I guess is legally how does this affect road worthiness?
Cheers
John
The vehicle takes on the identity of the chassis number. So if you swap chassis (with the number stamped on it), the vehicle effectively becomes a series 2A.
It doesn't. Going the other way does! The Series 3 has a variety of safety and emissions differences that will have no negative effect on roadworthiness if fitted to a 2a, but would be needed if you thought of putting a 2a on a S3 chassis. These differences include the windscreen hinges and door hinges, which are more pedestrian friendly on the S3, as well as interior fittings such as the dash which is better on the occupants knees than the 2a. But there are also equipment issues, but these depend more on the actual manufacture date than whether it is S3 or S2a. These include reversing lights, hazard lights, multispeed wipers, windscreen washer, heater/demister, fuel vapour capture,
The vehicle identity is the chassis. Almost everything is fully bolt on from the Series 3 onto a Series 2a chassis, provided it is the same wheelbase and number of cylinders. You may find you need to drill a few holes or do a bit of welding on the 2a chassis, but the amount of this will be pretty trivial. An example might be the fuel tank outrigger if the S3 has a 16gallon tank and the 2a has a 10 gallon.

Hi John,
It may vary from state to state BUT I believe that you would therefore be restoring a 2A (and not a 3).
The chassis number is what identifies the vehicle - not the body on top of it.
You would need to double check what ADR’s are applicable for the year of the 2A chassis - not your existing 3 chassis.
Having said that - I don’t think that there is a vast difference, but hopefully somebody more knowledge will come along soon.

I may not have been clear - I was pointing out the problems with going the other way. There are no roadworthiness issues putting a S3 on a 2a chassis, and trivial practical issues. But note that for legal purposes the vehicle is the chassis, and hence will be a 2a.

Thanks guys, very helpful.
I understand going from SIIa to SIII would have some issues, going the other way should hopefully be an easier process.
Much appreciated
