    Help needed Serial number

Hello to all I am trying to establish the correct Serial number of my old Ute in an attempt to get registration history.
I cannot find any stamping on the wheel arch sections of the chassis but inside the cabin is a small plate with
(Body No LRL 29502 ) and underneath ( No 19029502 ) the plate has a bolt through what could be Ser. Which I think is supposed to be the Serial number.
The plate is aluminium and has a circle with the words Produced by Pressed Metal Corporation Sydney, which I means it was sent over in a crate and assembled here.
    Thanks in advance Gippy

The PMC plate shows it is Australian built (assuming that the plate belongs to it). The serial number should be on the chassis, on the vertical bit of the spring hanger that the LH rear spring shackle is attached to. You don't say whether it is long or short wheelbase - on the long it is on the flat, vertical bit facing out just above the shackle, and about the same on the swb.

Expect to have to remove umpteen layers of paint, and possibly sand rust off to bright metal to see it.

The PMC number is exactly that, a PMC production number - has nothing to do with the vehicle serial number (chassis number) which was stamped on the chassis when it was made in the UK.

Will be on the LR plate and as suggested on the chassis on one of the spring hangers.

Also being a Series 3 it will be on the compliance plate after the model.

Like the pic below - after Land R0ver 3

Thanks for that I took the details from the compliance plate to VicRoads and was informed that number was not on their register so I’ll try to get it from the chassis and see what happens next.
    I appreciate the help.

Your vehicle should have a Land Rover plate like the big one in this pic (under the Pressed Metal plate) - it has the chassis number on it.

Copy and zoom if needed IMG_0552.jpg

Also that 19029502 number is not the chassis number - not sure what it is. This site will confirm your chassis number when you find it Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands

Also look on the passenger side rear spring hanger as it is there sometimes.

Also I am surprised the rego people did not recognise the Chassis Number from the compliance plate - that should be it after all it was the authorities that authorise the plate in the first case.

I'm pretty certain the number was stamped in Australia, even if the chassis was made in the UK. And compliance plates were introduced during Series 3 production.

The chassis number will only appear in Victorian records if the vehicle has ever been registered in Victoria, and probably only if it was registered in Victoria after Victoria moved to keeping digital records. Possibly only if registered after they moved to their current system - they may not have moved inactive records.

Thanks for all the help i do not have the square id plate some one in the past installed a Smiths heater where the plate was and removed said plate, but i did manage to find the Serial number on the spring hanger as you said it would be. I will take these details to Vic roads on Monday and hopefully they can identify it. The whole purpose for doing this was to see if it was registered with the Holden 186 motor when it was last registered if so i may be able to get around the certification inspection. If it wasn't i will install the 2.6 Land Rover motor i have from a donor car, i am nearly finished the major work on my daughters Series 3 Stage 1 and want to get into my ute.
Thanks again for the assistance Gippy

No rego sticker left on a widow ?

Best of luck with VicRoads, I'd try and do it by phone or email.......

The AOMC have VicRoads records up to the early 80's but.....they are collated by engine number.
You pay them to search (it's done manually) but I'm not sure it will help you. The only thing it would tell you is the rego number & owner, if you know the rego and the search by engine number comes up with the same rego it might help.

Archived Engine Number Records — AOMC

Hopefully VicRoads will have the info you need.

Just a comment on the above - many cars built up to the 1930s at least, did not have chassis numbers, but the engine was (almost) invariably numbered, as it was by far the most valuable part of the car, so that when more detailed records started being kept in the 1920s, they were based on the engine number. This system continued well into the era post war when all cars had chassis numbers. Large numbers of prewar cars remained in regular use well into the 1960s and beyond. I remember that on the route the bus took to school in the 1950s we passed a business whose sole business was wrecking Chevrolet fours and selling the parts, later refurbishing Chev fours. The last Chev four was made in the late 1920s.
