Thread: Interchangeability of 109 rear springs

I’ve just realised that the main leaf on the rear passenger side spring of my S3 ex-Military 109 GS is broken (p/n 537964). These are 9 leaves (I think I counted correctly), all thick, but from my reading these 1 ton spring sets are not handed.

I have another set of 109 springs which are the same length and thickness, but there are only 8 leaves in each set and they are handed. I was wondering if there would be any issue fitting these to the GS with the extended spring shackles etc. I’m not intending to carry a big load in the back or do heavy off road work or anything (so lower weight rating is not an issue), I am more so wondering if it will compromise anything else in the function of the suspension.

Alternatively if anyone has a lead on a secondhand replacement part for the 1 ton springs in the Hunter Region (NSW), that could give me another solution.

Alternatively again, I don’t suppose I could swap the main leaf out of one of the springs in my spare set (the thickness is the same) into the 1 ton set?

I thought I’d post some closure on this issue. Slunnie’s table was extremely helpful in identifying what springs I had in stock (I had not noticed it in my S3 manual). Turned out I had a set of 8 leaf “heavy duty”springs, and the 9 leaf packs with the broken main spring on my GS were “extra heavy duty” packs. I dismantled both sets and the main leaves were exactly the same, so I swapped the broken one out, cleaned, painted, reassembled and re-fitted. Thanks heaps for the advice guys, and to JDNSW for hunting around to find a potential replacement for me. Hopefully this info will be useful for others in the future
