This is very long winded but I am very pleased with the outcome.
It’s been a while trying different things on the engine but yesterday I finally got it running almost perfect gone is the dead spot and fuel pump issues. As I had stated earlier I had changed the fuel pump, the distributor and electronic ignition system but to no avail I still couldn’t get it to rev properly. So yesterday I stripped the carburettors again to inspect every part, throttle shafts are good no movement, floats are good and needle and seats are both set as per manual. Main needles are not worn but the jets are slightly oval, not having new ones I removed the old ones and filled the orifice with solder. I then selected a .100” drill bit and redrilled the jet orifices, this was only to prove where the issue might be coming from I will install new jets when they arrive. During the inspection I noticed the fuel bowl chamber had a vent which is externally in the form of a small tube/ pipe which exits near the inlet from the air filter connection. I believe this is what was causing the some of the problem, I couldn’t find a diagram of the pollution piping/ routing and had these two pipes connected to the old charcoal canister. So to check if this was an issue I left them disconnected from the canister and started the engine, it ran a lot better it didn’t have a flat spot but was missing still. I felt I was now getting somewhere gone was the flat spot and I could get it to pull better, after this I still had a bad miss which I couldn’t determine which cylinder, it seemed to be changing sides of the motor. I then checked all the wiring connections to the motor from the ignition and found the coil extremely hot indicating an issue. So off with the coil and ond with a new one, the car starts and runs almost like a clock I took it for a 50 kilometre test run through the bush around here and it didn’t miss a beat. This has been a journey that I could have done with out but it may help me to diagnose issues if I have them down the track and thanks for the input from members on things to check, I did fit a vacuum gauge and it did help prove the loss of vacuum but I didn’t realise this was caused by the fuel bowl not venting which prevented the engine getting sufficient fuel to run at load. The electrical was an intermittent thing as it wasn’t missing when cold I was only able to hear it once the engine warmed up and after fixing the carburettors venting issue.
Gippy.
