Bonnet frame

I have restored the bonnet on my ‘81 Series III. Mine didn’t have glue holding the aluminum skin to the support braces which are steel. Mine had also rotted due to the aluminum making contact with the steel.

You can buy the support brackets as one piece on Craddocks. I spent more than 100 hours fabricating then front and rear support braces that run parallel to the bulkhead and the braces that run perpendicular to the bulkhead and a few of the pieces that join the sides to the corners, body work repair and painting. I wish I had known that I could have purchased the entire support system.

Time consuming and the curved supports required advanced fabrication skills but the rest is straight forward.

I have a spare Series II bonnet plus a Series III ready to fit to my shorty, both rust free luckily. The one currently fitted to my shorty (temporary fit about 4 years ago) showers rust particles as you open/close it. The replacement has been prepped but I've never quite found the time to paint it......
The one currently fitted has part of a padlock hasp fitted, possibly a common 'bonnet lock' modification although my Dormobile has holes in the front panel where a Land Rover toolbox lock had been previously fitted and I'll probably re-instate one when I get time.

I've assumed that solid rivets = Series II and pop-rivets = Series III but, as usual, I guess there is no definitive date when it changed.
