    Land Rover series 3

    G'day folks,

I'm currently looking at buying a series 3 that has a ford 200 inline six in it. Does anyone here have any experience with these motors and could perhaps tell me what i'm getting myself into (are they easy to work on, parts cheap any and all info appreciated) Also, if this is the wrong place to post could someone point me in the right direction please.

    Cheers

My experience with those motors is a little out of date- my first car- in 1979- was an XT Falcon with a 221 (same motor more cubes) and a mate had an XP with a 200. A very basic motor, Ford's competitor to the grey & red sixes. The inlet manifold is cast to the cylinder head which limited carby options. Can't imagine parts being terribly difficult to source and they are simple to work on.

I've moved this to the Series III section Rolly....more chance of a catch there.

    Go for it.
The Ford six cylinder engines were a good conversion in the series Land Rovers, they have plenty of torque,
good strong reliable engines. As for parts, they were a pretty basic engine like most from that era, so i think
you would find most general maintenance parts are still available. I just did a search on the Repco site,
a water pump for them is listed and costs $60.
The Ford engine oil filter screws on perpendicular to the engine, so in a series Land Rover the standard Z9 filter
hits the chassis rail, some used to "notch" the chassis, or alternatively use the shorter Fairlane oil filter, Z89A.

As said above the standard Ford heads on those engines have the inlet manifolds cast into them, but you can
get the "2V" (two venturi) performance heads for the 250 ci engines, that were offered as performance upgrades
in some of the vehicle models. I am not sure if the 200 ci engine had a 2V head available, or if the 250 and 200
    heads are interchangeable.
A series with a Ford engine conversion will easily handle a gearing upgrade, like Overdrive, or a high speed TC, or 3.54 diffs.

    Good luck with your purchase.

    Cheers, Mick.

My son is always trying to get me to put a Ford Barra motor in the series 3.

They are cheap and fuel injected

Can get a good running one for far less than rebuilding the 186.

    Anyone done this conversion
    Cheers

Well, I have seen a Barra conversion into an XD Falcon, but not into a Series III....yet!

A fellow in the car club that i am in has just purchased a Ford Barra Conversion for his GQ Nissan Patrol.
He plans to do the conversion early next year, apparently they are an excellent engine in the Patrols, giving
fantastic performance and better fuel figures than the standard petrol engines.

I also know a bloke who fitted one into his Toyota Coaster motorhome and it is a beauty. From memory he
didn't use a commercial conversion kit, but made up his own conversion, adaptor plate, etc.
I believe the Barra engines are being exported overseas in big numbers every month, as they have a reputation
for being such a strong reliable engine and can be "worked up" to deliver some very serious horsepower.

    Cheers, Mick.

Those older Ford engines were bulletproof and a snap to work on. Better than Holden's offerings of the time IMO.

Now to the hijack to Barras. They won't always be cheap. There's a growing interest in them from our US friends due to the ease of getting enormous power out of them. The Patrol conversions are best done with the FG engines, rather than the BA/BF variants.

    ford 200 engine

My S3 "78 WAGON came with a Ford XE engine , they put the radiator in front of what is left of the radiator support panel, and an electric fan behind
(probably the original Ford one) with a switch on the dash to turn it on. I want to put the rad behind the support panel where it is supposed to be and have automatic electric fan(s). My question to the "panel" is has anyone else done this, if so would they share their experience such as the brand of fan and where did they get the rad.
