    Mystery dif

I recently bought a couple of 2nd hand difs. I was told they were S3 but unfortunately I didn't look at them properly when I picked them up. I believe they were off a s3 but certainly aren't the same as mine (1976 swb) and definately not Salisbury. Seller wasn't a Landrover owner, just selling off some part that had been left at a house he had bought.

I'm thinking they may have been higher ratio Rover car difs that a previous owner may have put in the car that I bought them out of. They have ROVER 528231A cast in to the body and 9862 63T2 stamped around the rim of the casting. Anyone shed any light? I can't find anything on line about Rover car part numbers.

Input side of the diff is separate to the main body casting and held in place by 6 bolts and they don't have the flat section of casting on the bottom of the body like standard LR difs.

I think what you have is a differential used on Series 2a up to suffix 'G'. Interchangeable with Series 1,2, late 2a and 3 provided the same ratio. (Did late S3 change from 10 to 24 spline side gears like they did at the hub?)

But it could be from several Rover cars, which were the same except for the ratio. Count teeth to check the ratio - All Series Landrovers were 4.7:1 except for Stage 1 3.54 and very early 80" which had other ratios.

But since they are all interchangeable, check what you have before putting another one in - four wheel drive does not work well with different ratios front and back!

Thanks John, haven't had a chance to count teeth as yet. I had a feeling 2 or 2A had the type of diff with the removable input section, but all my manuals and parts catalogues are S3 so don't show them. Looked for Rover car diffs on line but didn't think about earlier Landies online.
I'll prolly not use them as I want to keep it original S3 so may still need to source a replacement for mine or a new C&P for it as it was butchered years ago by a 'dif specialist' that I took it to get checked and serviced while the car was apart.
