I'm confused slightly as the gearbox seems to be working perfectly, changes gear easily, no horrible noises at all. When I acquired this gearbox I was given the impression it had been rebuilt

I've got it mated to a 200tdi motor and the test drives have been faultless, so I'm now faced with the dilemma do I leave it or get it stripped down and checked ?? I'd hate to get the vehicle all finished and then the gearbox disintegrates halfway to Melbourne

    Could it be a dowel?

Hi, this is intriguing. I've pulled open my gearbox twice and I've saved all the old bits because they're pretty.. sad, I know. I looked and compared, but I couldn't find anything that fit, and then I went through Geoffrey Croker's excellent videos. I wonder if it could be the dowel in the rear of the gear box where it mates with the transfer box. You can see it above the output shaft here (time 3:55).
You would only find it if the box was disassembled, but are there any other mating dowels that I can't remember?

I don't offer this with confidence, only as a possibility.

In case the link doesn't work it's a youtube video called
Land Rover Restoration Part 2 - Gearbox 1/2

    by Geoffrey Croker, time 3:55

    Cheers,
    Mike

nice video, haven't seen those before. no that dowell can't work its way into the gearbox. It's a bit bigger than the bearing roller too.

It's a LandRover, The gearbox could disintegrate at any time , especially behind a Tdi. If I was planning on driving any distance I'd be pulling it down for inspection.

Do you think it's possible to remove any of the inspection covers and get a camera in there to have a look before I remove the gearbox ??

It's rather annoying because I've just removed and refitted the gearbox to replace the rear main seal, which leaked on a test run This was a brand new seal too !!

On the plus side I'm getting quite quick at removing the gearbox. I will for piece of mind remove the gearbox and get it checked out.

box.jpg From look of this photo you will need to pull it apart. Easier to do at home than on the way to Melbourne. And you will be hearing strange noises all the way. You will also be hearing strange noises all the way to Vic.

Hi, in your first post you said you were tipping the gearbox oil out. When I do this job I would drain both the gearbox and transfer box oil into one bowl and then tip the lot out. Do you know if it’s just the gearbox oil or the transfer box oil as well? Could this bit have come from the transfer box?

    Cheers,
    Mike.

These are a couple of used bearings used on the lay shaft.
The one on the left, on a S3 shaft, has got 12x 6mm rollers about 6.4mm long.
The one on the right has got 11x6mm rollers about 7mm long.
It's up to you to decide what the chances are for one of them to escape.

Ive had some new rear layshaft bearings of dubious quality and a plastic cage , no one mentioned Britpart , they would fall apart in my hand. I'll go through my bearing box and see if I still have any.

I drained the gearbox oil separately to the transfer case oil, the foreign body was in the gearbox oil
