Series 3 Gearbox Query

I think I would be inclined to investigate the box. Even if it is a left over roller from before it was overhauled, you do not know whether it is the only one, and something like that going between any two gears in the box is not going to have a happy ending!

I found a brand new Britpart rear layshaft bearing in my parts bin , Its got no number on the bearing or the box , but no doubt what it is.

Not the nasty plastic cage version though , I flicked a roller out , its 8.93x7.43mm dia so a bit different to yours. The bearing spins nice & true with the roller missing , but be a different story with load on it.

It's rather annoying because I've just removed and refitted the gearbox to replace the rear main seal, which leaked on a test run [bigsad] This was a brand new seal too !!

On the plus side I'm getting quite quick at removing the gearbox. I will for piece of mind remove the gearbox and get it checked out.

It would be very difficult to see even if you could get a camera up next to the bearing as the first gear is directly in front of it , like this picture (from Cadas AULRO)

Thanks for all the replies, I will remove the gearbox yet again and get it stripped down and see what's going on [bighmmm]

I certainly do not wish to continue with the build until this problem is solved. After all, I'm trying to do it as a reliable touring vehicle

this should be printed on every britpart bearing box.

I removed the gearbox this morning and stripped it down just enough to remove the layshaft and inspect the bearing. On closer inspection I discovered that the one floating around in the oil, had in fact been dislodged from the bearing probably on a previous rebuild. [bighmmm] (not by me)

I put the bearing in it's proper place and reassembled the gearbox, 30 minutes later the gearbox was back in the Dormobile [smilebigeye]

I must remember to put some oil in it before I test it !!

Many years ago (in the 1950s) a cousin of mine took delivery of a new car in Sydney (Austin A30). After its initial 500mile service at the dealer, and perhaps its first 1000mile service, she and her husband started off to drive the car to visit her parents at Yanco. On the way, the gearbox failed, and the car was towed to the dealer at Wagga. The dealer replaced the gearbox under warranty, after reporting that the inside of the box was not even oily, and there was no evidence that it had ever contained any oil.

In 1965, I was running an exploration crew in the middle of the Simpson. Our 1000gallon water tanker, on a 6x6 Zeligson (rebuilt diamond T) had just had the RH front axle apart to reinforce the RH swivel ball housing. On its next trip to get a load of water (about 100 miles each way) as it came into camp, a crunching noise was heard as it turned. On stripping the swivel, it was found that the CV joint, instead of having five balls about 25mm diameter, consisted of a handful of dry powdered steel fragments.

When I posted my pictures and comments I didn't know that there were "economy " bearings on the market with easily removable rollers. Luckily you took someone else's advise.
