it can only be a roller from the rear layshaft bearing. How the hell it fell out and still running beats me, Time for a rebuild. reatl.jpeg
I changed the oil in my gearbox / transfer case today, as I was putting the gearbox oil in an old container I noticed this piece of shrapnel in the bottom of the bowl.
Does anybody know if it's some sort of roller bearing that's popped out of somewhere ?? It's about 10mm long and 6mm in diameter
I thought it might be a magnet but it isn't. Thanks in advance

That is what I was thinking.

Would the gearbox make horrible noises if it had fallen out of the bearing that's currently in the gearbox ??
If the rear layshaft bearing is missing a roller, the layshaft will be out of alignment, so all indirect gears would be expected to howl. And quite likely jump out of gear.

Jerry , these rollers can be pushed out when sliding the outer race over the bearing if the rollers are a little loose in the cage . I have seen this on Mini's when fitting the transfer case over the 1st motion shaft support bearing . Would have thought if it was missing would have shown signs of problems depending on how many K's it has done since last pull down. Only way you will know for sure is to pull it apart .
G'day All,
My thinking is how could a roller be able to be expelled from the cage when it is pressed up against the layshaft first gear without catastrophic damage?. Maybe from a previous malfunction?. Do you know the history of the gearbox?. Is the object solid or hollow?. Does not look like it is damaged or has wear marks.
Agree with others on layshaft not running true and would have symptoms. Could the object be a plunger/spigot from a detent or similar.
Just my thoughts.
Chris
That was my first thought , the detent 'plunger' pieces are a similar size but have rounded ends, the piece in the tweezers looks square ended to me.
