Tune up done. Much improved running but still have the same problem. It bogs down to stalling when I try to move forward or back. Gear selection isn't great either but there you go.
    Any ideas??

Only things I can think of is if the brake / handbrake shoes have oil on them causing them to become sticky or it is possible for the gear stick to disengage the reverse selector while in reverse & you can still select forward gears, this would cause it to bog down.

Perhaps check the gear selector linkages aren't broken, so you are not actually in 1st or 2nd but 3rd or 4th, although not moving in reverse seems to negate this theory, unless the linkages have been replaced incorrectly.

    Grasping at straws here on...

I assume you have pushed it in neutral. Have you tried to push in each of the hi range gears? If it won't move in any gear then that makes me think gearbox.

I had one flat spring break ($0.15 cents to replace) out of three flat springs in the syncho cluster for 1st and 2nd gear, the syncho cage now being off camber meant I could not select 1st or 2nd. Left me with only synchro set for 3 and 4th, in Sydney peak hour traffic. Don't know if this sort of thing can leave you in two gears at once and a jam, say 2nd in one synchro set and 3rd in the other synchro set? Talking more than 40 years ago so memory a bit sketchy on the box.

    Good luck.

Thanks all for input. Gone back to the start again as it makes no sense. Got the rear wheels in the air and selected 1st. Let the clutch out and the wheels spin for a few seconds then stop. Like it jumped out of gear, but the lever didn't move and the gearbox would have made a noise if it had jumped out. I am also leaning toward the gearbox now but can't picture what is happening in my head.

Workingonit, the car was bought as a runner that had sat for a few years. No explanation why it was laid up. It was towed to me so I can only assume this was an issue before i saw it. The engine was ok although in need of a good tune. My brief was to get the car up and running and ready for a roadworthy test.

Something just occurred to me as a possibility - it is stuck in four wheel drive; and has different front and back diff ratios.Of course this is counted out if free wheel hubs are disengaged or the front prop shaft temporarily removed.

JDNSW thanks. Last time it was in the air I checked to make sure it was in 2wd only and it was. Will be checking everything again though.
