    Series III Steering column removal

    Hi All,
I am currently dismantling my series III so I can do some much needed repairs on the firewall.

I am a bit stuck on how to remove the steering column, the manual and Youtube videos don't seem to explain where to start.

As you can see in the photo it looks like a big nut that needs to be undone and I am unsure if it just requires a lot of pressure or am I going about this all wrong and headed for some damage. Any knowledge or links on how best to remove would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Yes, that nut needs to come off to disconnect the pitman arm. It should be tight, and as you can see it has a locking washer to make sure the nut stays done up.

It is possible that you may need a puller to start the arm moving on the spline. It is probably possible (but not as easy) to remove the assembly disconnecting the other end of the pitman arm with a tie rod end splitter. But removing the arm from the box is easier.

    PITMAN ARM

We have just done this job for the same reason ,rust .i undid the nut on the ball joint a little and gave the pitman arm end a whack with a small engineers hammer it loosened from the taper ,i undid the nuts and bolts on the two brackets and removed the box with them disconnected from the box but still floating behind the pitman arm ,undid the bracket were the shaft enters the cab rotated the box and pulled it out ,the brackets come off the box without removing the pitman arm from it for clean up and paint [ no puller required} ,i plan to re install in reverse ,

I can't recall; does the pitman arm have a master spline or should it be marked to make sure centre isn't lost?

Just looked at the manual. No master spline is mentioned, and it describes setting the wheels straight and the steering box halfway though its motion, so I assume there is no master spline.
