I don't have one available to check, but I think it is to provide clearance for the bulge on the flywheel housing for the starter pinion.
Hi, I am in the process of restoring my Series III. I have noticed that there is an intentional dent in the gear tunnel parts.
Maybe it was because my car had a non-genuine engine in but when I saw another series three part it had the same dent.
Should I give my panel beating skills a go and knock this flat or is there a reason for this dent? I am putting in a 300TDI engine in my car.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Chris

I think you will find it is to clear the starter motor.
I think you will find it is to clear the starter motor. I may be wrong though.
Hello Chris,
These are a couple of photographs from my Series III fitted with a 2.25 four cylinder diesel. Yes, there is a definite bulge. The purpose of this bulge would be as John suggests to make way for starter pinion.
The 2.6 litre petrol motors do not have the bulge in that place - they are angled like this \ with an inspection hole in the slope.
Kind regards
Lionel
Thank you all for the quick replies. The bulge stays as it looks like it is needed
Yep, mine has it too.
Curious about the 300TDi bit. Have you a thread running for this? If not, are you using the Series gearbox etc., or R380/LT230? Or something else, of course.
