Newbie. Mph vs Kph dials series 3 in oz

    First post….
Hi I have moved over from the uk where I worked in Solihull Land Rover for the last 10 Years.

    I am looking to buy a series 3 1974.

    Question….
The dash dials are in mph as the primary and (Kph in the centre).
Reviewing a great restoration on this site by Tim, his old and new dials showed KPH as the primary with mph in the centre.
Do all oz series 3 vehicles have Kph as primary? And then is the car I am looking at an import from the uk by a customer? Or is this normal for the car I’m looking at to have mph as the primary in oz?

Also, I have the chassis number, is there a list or database I can look it up on to gather more info on this car?

    Thanks
    Rand

Australia went metric in the early 70’s so there was a transition in speedos from miles to kilometres around the time you are referring to. A good many cars of the era had that dual set up on the speedometer. By about 1975 most would have been just kilometres per hour without the miles printed on the face. That’s what my 1975 truck has.

For a while the car accessory places were selling adhesive replacement faces for a lot of different car models. I helped a few mates changeover the speedo faces for their pre 75 Datsuns and Toyotas.

    Cheers

There were also adaptors for the speedo drive so that the MPH figures actually represented KMH on the dial. One of the many issues this caused was some quite high odo readings....

The '74 HQ ute i owned had Km/hr and MPH on the speedo, but i can't remember which was in the center, and which was on the outside of the dial.I have a feeling Km/hr was on the outside.ODO was in KM.

Worked fine, until i changed the diff to another ratio, then it was inaccurate until i fitted the correct cog to the gearbox end of the speedo cable....

I had a 1974 Citroen - it came with MPH, but when I bought it in 1979, I fitted a metric speedo. I think 74 would have been just about the last year fitted with MPH.

But of course, there is no guarantee that the speedo fitted now is the one it left the factory with!

My 73 HQ Kingswood had a MPH speedo only. When speeds changed to metric, we bought him a metric speedo for his 72 HQ Wagon to save him having to calculate from MPH to KPM.

July 1974 was when Australia officially changed all road sign speed limits from mph to kph. No idea how long it took to make the change - wasn’t old enough to pay attention. But learning to drive in cars built from 1970 to 1974 some had Speedos in MPH and others in KPH.
