    tyre size options

What size tyres can be fitted on a S3 without too much rubbing?

Its a Stage 1 if that makes any difference.

Rear isnt an issue as will be a trayback.

I am guessing 255/85's will be too tall. Maybe something a bit wider too.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers
    Pete

35" ET's will rub a little behind the headlights.... the headlights are the limiting factor on these. I'm moving the axle back by 35mm to fix the prob with 37's and I suspect it may still be further forward than where the Defender has it.

Kermit here I think is on what looks like Cruiser offset (-25mm) rims with 35x10.5-16 Simex ET's.

    Cheers

    Thanks Simon,

    Is that yours?

So 255's would be fairly straight forward then

With a military or 1 ton chassis you should be able to go up to 36"-37" without problem, although you may want to consider lower ratio diffs.

For the civvy spec chassis do as Slunnie suggests.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Hi Pete, thats not mine. A fellow Chris owns that one, but I don't think that he is a member on here. He's a LROC Tuff Trip regular.

I'm really not sure what is needed for 255's - I'm assuming 255/85-16. I'm sure it would be a no brainer though. Offset rims at worst to keep the tyres off the chassis. I haven't played at all with OE axles and rims.

It may also need guard and bumper bar cutting. With the non-headlighted front guards its also a no brainer...... damn those headlights!!!!

Diana you're right re the gearing though. That one apparently was not nearly as nice to drive when it had the LT95 in it. Its now got a ZF and LT230 which apparently has improved it.
    Cheers

Just thought I'd show you an image of a 1 ton SIIa with the standard 36" tyres.

    And without articulation.

Thanks for this! The rims look widened/offset and the guards dont look trimmed at all. Do these run the Mil type dumb irons and shackles or are they spring lifted at all?

    Slunnie

The 1 Tons were never sold in Australia, however there was one prototype that came out in private hands and remained. The vehicle is currently lost but I would dearly like to get my hands on it. It also had a Scottorn Bushmaster driven trailer, possibly also a prototype and that too is lost.

The 1 Ton chassis is essentially the same as the Australian SIII Military chassis without the upper spring mounting position. The springs are the same eye to eye but 13 leaves on the front and heavier on the rear. Again essentially the same springs as the Military SIII.

Sorry Slunnie, missed the rims bit.

The rims are the standard 1 Ton rims, 6.5" almost the same as the SIIa Forward Control. Rover Part number 569204 - I have 1 pair and the offset is within a few mm of the F/C type and in fact very similar in offset to the 120 and early Defender 130 rims, although achieved by a slight change in the rim profile.

Same rim as fitted (by me) to my SIII FFR which were also used on the Britt Army "pink panthers".
