I'm not sure mate, I have had a look at a handful over the past few months and the amounts that people ask and offer varies wildly.

Actually, I think I have these saved somewhere (just in case I get to do it someday). They involved small mods to the injection pump. Also extractors and bigger exhaust with a nice late model air filter and snorkel with a scoop let the old oiler breathe better. I have a home-made snorkel with a scoop with a Disco (I think) filter and it did make a bit of a difference.

The oilers are a nice engine for off-road work. Slow, but steady.

This is a random question, but will the roof be removable on a 78 Series 3? SWB... Wouldn't mind cruising around with the top off

The roof is removable on all Series Landrovers (not quite that simple on five door wagons), but there will be a problem with the top outboard seat belt mounts - these are on the hardtop.

I have a 2.25d a series 111 which is currently on holidays at the moment i.e. she is jumping out of reverse gear. This is an 88 inch model i.e. short wheelbase model. Despite the fact it is fitted with a Roverdrive overdrive I could only get 22-23 mpg out of it.That is onroad driving. Always passes the mot with emissions no bother. Any ideas enginewise to improve the mpg. Long term project to get her back in action.

    Need more info:
    Roofrack?
    Tyres?
    Usual load?
    Usual speed/driving?
    Brakes dragging?
    Does the engine smoke much?

Not mine, I once beat a IIA ute with a well tuned 2.25P up cunningham's gap. I don't think he was driving it absolutely flat out, but I was about 500m behind at the bottom, and about 1km in front at the top. I was also on 33's while he was on 7.50s.

With a bit of tuning you can get a 2.25D to at least match the on-road performance of the 2.25P. I have posted the mods I did to my engine on here somewhere.

Btw - this was the 2.25P in question:

Those who know it will know it is fastidiously maintained, and one of the most capable IIAs around, on and off road.
Love that IIA looks very capable - does he have similar suspension mods to you to get that sort of flex out of the leaf springs? Would be keen on more pics & info

We have a block of land at Maryvale, just the other side of Cunningham's Gap as you would know - I have had my old girl up there a few times. I generally cruise up easily in 2nd gear, I'm assuming you were hauling in 3rd? If so that is real good and I am definatly going to have a look at your mods. My engine has been freshened up in the last 10 years - I have extractors on my 2.25P

    N0 roofrack
    205x16 Sime Frontiers m+s tyres
    Driver only
Road speed 50 mph in overdrive- max
    No brakes dragging
Some bluish smoke but no topping up needed
Before I get the gearbox sorted I would like to get better mpg from the engine. Have been offered a series 111 with a lovely tight gearbox and beautiful body. (My gearstick wobbles all over the place when looking for a gear.) No test drive yet but engine seems really good. Might be better to buy this than spend money on my own.
