Hey guys i have got first dibs on a Series 111 Safari with a 2.25 Diesel motor. After reading some threads i have gathered they are a work horse and not built for speed which i can handleand are great in the scrub which is my main interest with this 4x4 as i already have a Tidy 300tdi D1 to get me around the city
Just curious on figures such as diesel consumption doing general around town work as i will not be taking it on the highway. i think i read somewhere 9L Per 100K but that seemed rather optimistic? or are they really that polite to your wallet? Also how are they to live with? reliable? The one i am looking at has been well looked after and is a friend of a friends so i know what im told is not from a Danoz add...
Also what is a going price for one of these? i am sure its broad all i know is this one is running out of reg in a month as is in good nic and has been looked after.
Cheers guys! oh its a shorty.
The best I ever did when I had one was 36mpg! Usually got around 30mpg.

By all accounts they are extremely reliable.
84' 120" ute - 3.9 isuzu.
30 mpg is what I was getting on average even on The Cape.
The thing is that fuel consumption of the old LR diesels doesn't seem to change very much between city and highway, but speed is the main issue. 50-55 mph is the most reasonable cruising speed.
They are great, I am condisering a 2.25D conversion for my IIA BUT...
If you have ever driven a 2.25P and thought they were slow... the 2.25D is SOWER hahahah
saying that I am still thinking of doing the conversion when money allows
Oright well sounds like im on to a winner ill have a look on the w.e get some pics details price and see what you far more knowledged people think of the price
I plan on using it as my work horse, and keep it as standard as possible.
Indeed! As soon as you push the speed up above 55 the fuel economy suffers.
Not mine, I once beat a IIA ute with a well tuned 2.25P up cunningham's gap. I don't think he was driving it absolutely flat out, but I was about 500m behind at the bottom, and about 1km in front at the top. I was also on 33's while he was on 7.50s.If you have ever driven a 2.25P and thought they were slow... the 2.25D is SOWER hahahah
With a bit of tuning you can get a 2.25D to at least match the on-road performance of the 2.25P. I have posted the mods I did to my engine on here somewhere.
Btw - this was the 2.25P in question:
Those who know it will know it is fastidiously maintained, and one of the most capable IIAs around, on and off road.
My Diesel 2.25L SWB achieved 9 to 10L per 100km. Only problem I ever had with it was the lack of speed and that when it came to some hard climbs around the back of Brunswick it would run out of guts, even in low range first. It would keep the wheels turning, but not fast enough to dig it's way up some steep inclines. As a comparison a 4" lifted 3L petrol Patrol was able to make it (though the guy was thrashing the crap out of it and had to replace his clutch a month later) and a Defender 300tdi slowly crawled up with not a problem at all with it's front and rear diffs locked. Mine had a knocking noise which I took on advice was a bad bearing. I pulled the engine out and pulled it apart to find the bearings along with all the other internals were fine, it turned out that the Diesel pump timing had slipped and needed adjustment which I hear is common.
