I know of nothing wrong with the series3- I have no experience with them. But my friend says that the chassis was of poorer quality and lower quality steel used because of some deal with fiat or something.

I'm asking for advice as I'm seriously thinking of buying one. I'd be happier doing modifications to a series three than the 2a GS. I want to restore that to army specs but, I assume, I'd be getting a better/more comfortable tourer with the diesel series3.

My old man has one very similar to that, for the 5 or so years it was on the road he had no major problems. Apart from a leaky radiator :p

His liked to jump out of 1st rather than 3rd, but apart from that was a great thing.

The chassis and bulkhead are full of rust, but thats life. Possibly the previous owner/owners driving on the beach without washing it properly.

If your worried about the chassis have a climb under and poke it with a screwdriver. If it goes through the chassis offer him a bit less :p

I would buy the lot - but maybe offer him 800-900.

2.25Ds are good engines if you aren't in a hurry, and late SIII versions have a few upgrades compared to SIIA versions.

Series IIIs are just as good as SIIAs - only downside is the gearbox, and the thin steel backing of the dash which rusts easily.

Actually, it has been from reading your posts about your diesel performance that has made me seriously consider it.

its actually a little below stock in terms of performance....

but then it does run on anything from this side of sweet light crude to olive oil.

yeah... Specially now summers coming back and I should be able to get my WVO sorted out again...

On that note I cannot believe how freaking hard it is to try and get the ATO to work out what paperwork you need to do to pay the excise for doing WVO....

When mine was in its prime it would beat a good 2.25P. Since the 2.25P is the same basic engine, it is quite understressed. So both engines have about the same lifespan.

The main advantage is that the diesel will use half the fuel of the petrol. And has great low down torque for pottering round the bush.

Unlike what Dave says, the CAV DPA injector pump which the 2.25D has, doesn't like fuels which are too viscous. So while it will run fine on biodiesel (I usually use B20), it will not last long on veg oil.

I originally rebuilt my 2.25P. It went quite well, and would happily do 125km/h on the highway (without OD) - and beat my dad's 88" with a twin barrel webber carby. However I didn't regret the switch to a 2.25D for one microsecond.

I recall reading on the biofuel forum ( Bio Fuels Forums - Powered by vBulletin ) that while fuel excise was payable on biodiesel, non transesterified fuel (AKA SVO/WVO) was not included. This may have changed though.
