Smile Brian's Series 3 SWB Rebuild

This has been a long time Build and has been a long time just getting here. This is my Restore/ Retro build. This 4WD is going to take me to the tip in 2011/12. The project isn't as hard as others tho the only thing in my way is my Colour Blindness and my lack of time away from home (300 days Last year) driving my truck.

here are the pics from the start:

It is just a plain shorty with a petrol in it and a PTO and Thomas winch. The chassis is shagged and it has no door tops and Slight rust in footwells. It would be a get car besides the Chassis. I had earlier in the year put it up for sale and after finding this chassis it was hard to sell it with now all the gear.

I have just brought a chassis from this forum( Thankz Gordon) and have just taken it off my truck and have started to look at what will happen next. Because of where i live and where i will be going i will be Galvanizing the Chassis and doing minor repairs.

    Here are the pics:

I am currently going to put a 2.25ltr diesel in it (when i get one) and change Transfer case gears to make it do 100kph. I will put thermos and maybe change the radiator when i get around to that part of the deal. I will deck out the rear with some storage and looking at a Roof camper for it tho maybe just a swag for the trip, But that is later on down the track.

I haven't got a colour for it yet tho i do like maroon or a real red ( funny i cannot see the colour for what it is ) Interior will be made for the harsh conditions i will take it.

But this is a Start and hopefully i can complete it soon.

    Cheers

Great start Brian, it'll be good to have a few more series vehicles tackling the rough stuff.

    Great to see!

As a guy talking about the death of Mark Leyland said on Sunrise today, if you're going to do what they did get yourself and old 4wd.

I reckon he's referring to reliability and parts. No electronics or things that can't be fixed in the middle of nowhere, especially with a diesel.

If there was a war or something and we had to flee I'd take an old Landy over a new Japanese 4wd without hesitation.

I was advised not to do the transfer case conversion as the 2.25 diesel does not have the grunt to drive it. It is alot of money to spend to find out when you hit the first hill that an overdrive was the better option.

    Nice.

Yes I have the 2.25D and overdrive. It is pretty breathless at speed and often switch back out of overdrive on even a slight incline.

They are very comfortable at 80kmh - I just got used to driving slower.

(Added benefit is that you can hear the radio........just!)

but if i have and overdrive i am unable to use the PTO??

The diesel i have in my old ute is looking for a rebuild and i may use it if i have to and it has no balls at all. 80kph doesn't worry me tho geez you can drink alot rum at that speed.

    Cheers

Good point. Keep the pto and learn to "take your time". It's a land rover after all. Any time you make by travelling fast will be lost with additional repairs.

I would just leave the ratio/overdrive issue unless you plan on lots and lots of highway kms.

Careful with the rum though - this will add to your TSR*

    * toilet stop ratio.
