Which replacement Coil for 2.25 Petrol
G'day,
I have had many replies to a previous post and a couple of which have thrown me a curve ball.
The "debate" is which Coil is correct for the Australia Built 1972 LWB.
My local parts supplier says it is the GT40R... and some guys and girls say it is the GT40...
I am officially confused... Is my local (Major Chain) parts outlet wrong?
Thanks Phil

The "R" means it needs a Ballast Resistor, I believe, and the non-R version does not. The non-R version suits electronic ignition, not points.
So, unless you've converted to electronic ignition, you need the GT40R.
I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.

Not always true as disco and range rovers use GT40R and RT but they also have amplifers as well
In my stage 1 I am using a disco coil with no electronic ignition
Part No
0 221 119 030 (for a series 3)

Gday Mate,
I replaced my coil on Saturday. Just went down to Repco and got the one from their catalog. Ill pop down to the shed and have a look what it says. Works like a charm, the car has never started so good (i suspect the old coil has been on its way out for a while)
EDIT: Been to check...appears I have the GT40R... Works a charm :-)

Another little tip, make sure your coil is wired the right way round. Negative (-) to the distributor. I spent ages changing burnt points every oil change in my KE20 Corolla until the mate I mentioned before pointed it out. That car had a dual circuit ignition.
Also on coils, the other day I had a friend burn one out on his S3 just by leaving the ignition on without running it. NB: it was a cheap coil though, made somewhere in the backblocks of Taiwan. I fitted a second hand GT40, and now it goes just fine.

... just to add ... I put an electronic ignition on the 2.25 and ran it with the existing GT40R and ballast resistor. The module in the elec ig lasted a whole two days. I got a replacement module and tried a bog standard Botch resistor coil and it's purred like a kitten for 18 months so far ...
