    Leaf Spring Bushes - Loose Bushes

    Hi All,

    I am working on my 1960 Series 2 - SWB.

    When I removed my rear Leaf Springs, the bushes in the rear of both spring eyes simply fell out. The spring eye doesn't look damaged. I purchased some replacement bushes - and they too don't sit tight in the spring eye.

    All of the other bushes (the front of the rear leaf springs) and both ends on the front leafs - are very tight. On another project I had to drill the rubber out so that I could remove perished bushes - so I know how tight they can be!

    Do I have to resolve this issue? (I assume that the bushes could expand over time with heat?) But I also assume that it the bushes are too loose, it could cause movement, which probably isn't good either.

    How do I resolve this issue?

    As always any help is greatly appreciated.

    You should resolve it. The eye should be easily crimped shut the necessary small amount, possibly in a large vice or a press. An alternative, requiring the donning of a striped apron, is to shim the bush so that it becomes a press fit - jam tin works well, although you may have to experiment to work out how much of a full circumference is needed. Although not an approved method, I have seen it work quite well in spring eyes; don't use it in solid bits such as the chassis bushes or on coil sprung arms.
