To remove the overdrive, disconnect the linkage and undo the ring of bolts holding it, slide back (one bolt needs to have it slid back to get the last few threads). To use it with the overdrive removed, you need to remove the drive dog from the gearbox output shaft and replace it with a transfer case input gear. The overdrive itself needs to be replaced by a transfer case rear cover and bearing (gasket needed). You will probably need a gear puller to remove the dog.
Most, but not all the parts are available, although some may take a while. Most bearings and seals can probably be sourced from your local bearing dealer if you supply samples, or even in some cases if you supply the Rover part number.
Noisy even when not engaged suggest that a bearing is failing, although it may be the idler shaft bearings in the transfer case rather than the overdrive itself.
Hope this helps,
John
