    Engine Number

    Hi All,

I am cleaning up the engine in my 1960 SWB Series 2.

Under all the dirt and grime I found this:

It's the number 537 - on the passenger side of the block...

Does it mean anything? (I know that it is not the engine number).

They seem to be quite common - I had one on my S1 engine - perhaps they are batch numbers.

To preserve mine I traced it onto a piece of paper; measured two reference points and made the tracing into a stencil after the block had been cleaned and re-painted,

    Cheers Charlie

It was a staff reward prize number.
Land Rover workers got to put their employee number on engines if they bolted the head to the block. A prize was given to that worker if, at the end of the working week, their number was on the most engines. It was seen as a way of motivating staff with minor rewards.

could come back and bite you on the B#m

Watch out it might come back and bite you on the fore mentioned.
    or should it be ?
Watch out it might come back and bite you on the rear mentioned.

After stripping down some of the paint on 'HECter', I marvel at the way the original paint just refuses to give way and if I can find a type of paint that stays as well, I will be using that for sure.

I figured that it was a joke...

What is slightly interesting is that the numbers are painted on - and the paint has lasted 53 years! I need some more of that paint!
