S2a Diesel: clutch slipping and slurring
Team - on Friday I left my Land Rover parked on a steep hill all day. When I returned I found a puddle of 80/90W oil underneath my clutch...
Today , after a long drive, my clutch was slipping and slurring with each take off. A strong burning gearoil smell accompanied particularly long slipping episodes.
Is my clutch ruined?
What would you guess a clutch replacement job will cost me?

Did you park front down on a steep hill? There is no mechanism to stop the oil from coming out from the front of the gearbox via the primary shaft.
When I have had oil on the friction plate in the past, I have applied the brakes and ridden the clutch in fourth gear. This gets the friction plate hot and burns the oil out. Be careful not to get it too hot.
You could clean the friction plate with clutch and brake cleaner spray. You can spray it down the inspection hole under the gearstick.
If you go to the trouble of taking the friction plate out to clean it, it would be wise to replace it. I have seen them listed for $70.
If your diesel has the diaphragm pressure plate, as it should, you need the 9 1/2" friction plate. The petrol with the three lever pressure plate has a 9" friction plate.

Thanks! I followed your steps and it appeared to work!
No more parking on steep slopes.
