Thread: Vee Belt Identification

G'day All,
While trying to obtain a replacement Vee Belt for an industrial engine found out how the measurement system works.
There are two critical measurements that you need to know.
1) The outside circumference of the belt and
2) The effective length of the belt.
The outside circumference is easy to measure with string or wire. However this is not the measurement that is used to identify the belt you need.
The belts identity is determined by the effective length which is shorter the the outside circumference.
So look up the dimensions of the belt starting with the outside circumference which you have measured, then use the effective length measurement to order the correct belt.
I always wondered why the belts I ordered were to long when I used the outside circumference measurement!!.

It is why when you go to industrial rubber and good auto parts suppliers they have a measuring tool which slips inside the belt and pushed up tight, the calibration is half the length in inches/cm e.g. 1 inch on the measure = 2 inches on the belt.



You can use it in reverse too, if you have a belt that is too long or two short, measure the belt you have and subtract or add the difference.

Remember there are also different sections "A" or "B" etc. but remember automotive "B" section are different (smaller) than industrial "B" section belts
