    Wombat's party dress

When I bought Wombat (a 107 Series 1), I cheerfully believed that I'd turn her into my personal view of 'the perfect Landy' - dark green, all canvas top. Guess I can't get away from my British racing green convertibles

Sure, when I bought her, she was grey (well, blue over grey) and had that ute cabin, but I thought "I'll just leave the cabin off and paint her green".

Then I started doing some research, made easier by the recent arrival of James Taylor's 'Original Land-Rover' and that's when the dark clouds began to gather. Taylor confirmed what I'd begun to suspect - the 107 came with the ute cabin as standard and the grey paint was pretty much what the export vehicles were painted.

I know she's mine and I can do what I want to her, however, she's nearly 60 years old and it's possible there weren't too many 107s made - originality starts to become important, even though she'll be built to work and to bring a smile to my face as I use her.

The options seem to be basically:
    - grey paint, with cabin as original (though she'd have a raised canvas cover, not the ute type which is what I believe they came with)
    - dark green with cabin (and a canvas cover at the back)
    - dark green with a full length canvas top.

I'd prefer the last but seeing the tub doesn't line up with top of the doors like on the shorter models, I'm guessing it'd look a bit daft which sort of promotes the second option to preferred.

But, did we get dark green 107s here? My searching skills aren't good enough to really answer that question.

Any thoughts? Although I'm a way from painting the body, I will need to know what colour to paint the firewall. At least the chassis is easy - black as per original (and yes, I can see the irony).

No one's got any thoughts eh?
Well, my daughter thinks I should paint the truck purple.

Diana (Lotz-a-landies), I managed to find a comment by you some years ago that while Grey was the most common colour for the 107s here, many were also painted bronze green. Can you confirm?

I'm sure there's a thread or otherwise on here telling us all about colours per model but I'm damned if I can find it.

To my knowledge they were grey with dark blue wheels. Except the fire engines, they were painted red. Of course don't quote me on this. How we determine the original colour is we find a panel the has been hidden, usually under the seat, that hasn't seen the light of day.

Oh I know the original colour, just not overly fussed with grey. Interesting about the blue wheels, that's a new one to my knowledge base (which is, to be honest, pretty darned small). It's just not what I envisioned when I started this foolishness.

    OK To answer some questions...

    - grey paint, with cabin as original (though she'd have a raised canvas cover, not the ute type which is what I believe they came with) Not sure what you mean by this?

    - dark green with cabin (and a canvas cover at the back) Sounds good

    - dark green with a full length canvas top. Have you all the hoops and window surrounds? If not there like rocking horse ****, extremely hard to come by in other words. We have had several requests for them and when I find any part of them I snap them up.

Actually, I meant the same as the second option only in the original grey. By 'ute type', I mean the sort of cover you see on a normal ute, flat with the top of the sides, which is what I understood was normal.

    - dark green with cabin (and a canvas cover at the back) Sounds good
I'm glad you said that because it's where I'm leaning, particularly if some of the utes did come in the green.

And I guess that nails it. I don't have the hoops so the easiest option is to build her up as a ute and try to get hoops for a raised cover at the back. For use, that raised cover is fairly important to me but I suspect that sticking with the cabin means that it's not essential to have it immediately (ie, I can assemble bits as I find them, or make them if possible) and it probably means I'm dealing with a 'standard' canvas hood from a supplier.

Is anything to do with Land Rovers 'standard'.

    Thanks for the reply.

Paint it the colour you like. I personally like the green landy look.

A supplier you say. Now let me find the thread of the 107 truck cab with the canvas roof our supplier made. As with all out land Rovers

In other words, as well as teaching myself how to weld, I'm going to have to teach myself how to sew canvas
