    Using an unusual amount of fuel?

    The other day I decided to finally fix my Voltage Stabilizer in my Series2A. I had finally gotten sick of my temperature and fuel gauges under-reading by about a quarter.

    I dismantled it carefully and found the tell-tale white powder of a poor (burning?) connection on the thick bar, so I went and raided my spares just to do the job properly and once. I cleaned the points and the earthing tab on the replacement unit and put it all back together. Job done and the gauges work perfectly again!

    The unexpected upside was the vast improvement to my fuel economy! I had pretty much resigned myself to 16mpg after trying everything else, but now I'm back to 20mpg after the VS job!

    I have to say, I have no idea why that fixed it, I just know that it did. I'd be only guessing that maybe it was robbing the spark power from the distributor. Perhaps somebody more electrically inclined could enlighten me. In the meantime, this bit of hard won experience could help somebody else with the same problem.

    more accurate make/break on the points, spark timing is now on spec after you did the clean up and its sparking harder promoting a better firing off of the fuel giving you a faster and harder start to combustion causing the cylinder pressure to peak faster and as the cylinder passes TDC instead of after it passes TDC when obtaining a higher peak pressure is harder because the gasses are doing work pushing the cylinder down as opposed to building pressure and heat getting ready to push it down.

    Gents - is the voltage stabilizer that you are talking about on the rear of the speedo - supplying 10v to the gauges ? It sounds like something else to what I am thinking of if you can dismantle it and it makes a difference to fuel economy. I was looking at mine as being a possible culprit in my overheating saga (wrong voltage to the gauge).

    Yes it is the little metal box attached to the fire wall with 2 wires attached to it. IME it is the screw and subsequent earth to the firewall that corrodes/breaks.
    It could cause the issue you have been having. Clean all the contacts or replace it and find out.
    That would be a cheap fix !!
    You can also get electronic ones to replace them. (try LR Voltage controller on Ebay.)
