Gents - is the voltage stabilizer that you are talking about on the rear of the speedo - supplying 10v to the gauges ? It sounds like something else to what I am thinking of if you can dismantle it and it makes a difference to fuel economy. I was looking at mine as being a possible culprit in my overheating saga (wrong voltage to the gauge).

Yes it is the little metal box attached to the fire wall with 2 wires attached to it. IME it is the screw and subsequent earth to the firewall that corrodes/breaks.
It could cause the issue you have been having. Clean all the contacts or replace it and find out.
That would be a cheap fix !!
You can also get electronic ones to replace them. (try LR Voltage controller on Ebay.)
