    Series 3 main gear change lever

    Hi,
    Could anyone tell me the thread size on the main lever, where the black Knob attaches.
    I was thinking maybe 1/2 inch UNC, or is it some strange English thread size.
    I want to clean up the thread before attaching a new knob.
    Was there a locking nut below the knob ????

    It is 1/2" BSF unless I am mistaken, but Series 3 (and late 2a) had a push on knob with a rubber bush (571661) rather than screwing it on and a locknut. Early 2a (possibly all Australian ones) had a locknut.

    Of the two series 3 gearboxes? I have, one has a threaded top, The other had no thread. I just thought someone had cut the thread off.
    Also maybe that's why the original knob was silicomed onto the threads of the rod.
    Ordered a new series 3 black knob, from rover parts au.
    Wonder what type will arrive ?

    Series III should come with a metal shim (there must be a technical term) to fit it to the gearstick. Shown in this link PSK 1066 - Series 3 Knobs Kit

    The earlier gearlever is 1/2" BSF as john stated 217735 - Knob, Main Gearbox, 1948 to 1971

    Guess lots of things can be changed on a series over 50 odd years.
    So a earlier gear lever fits a later one no problems, as my gearbox is numbered 903xxxxxx..
    How often did the gear lever snap, as I noticed the other one has been welded at some point in its life.
    What are some of the things to look at, checking for worn parts, when taking the covers off the gearbox.
    I suppose checking the drained oil for any metallic bits.
    As the motor may have only done around 26,000 miles ( speedo from the same ) indication from the lack of internal wear, I hope the gearbox, which was attached to it, was the original with the same number of miles on it.
    If I remove the top cover, how many bits may fall in the gearbox ?
    Is there a serial number, from which the gearboxes were full synchro ?

    I doubt that you can believe the speedo on a 50 odd year old vehicle.
    and your's, like mine, probably only goes to 99,999miles

    For rebuild/repair & knowing what will fall into the gearbox have a look here Isuzu C240 powered Series 3

    Seems the gearsticks were often broken by the number of welded ones you see around.

    I think all Series III were full synchro, but not sure of gearbox numbers.

    With new STD mains and bigends, replacing the old STD ones and STD bore, but now opened out to 20 thou, don't think the motor went round the clock.
    The engine specialist, suggested the 26,000 on the clock was probably not far off.

    Series 3 ( 903xxxxx ) no top thread. Hole for reverse light switch.
    Mine in Gilbert ( 903xxxxx ) top thread. No Hole for reverse light switch, suggesting an earlier type ?
    Early ( 146xxxxx ) No Hole for reverse light switch in closer one, and spring latch round top cover.
    late gearbox ( 903xxxxx ) rear of two, lever angles.

    Hi Whitehillbilly,

    All series 3 were all synchro, some very very late series 2a boxes may have also been all synchro but I have never seen one. However since bell housings are interchangeable, gear levers are interchangeable and transfer case (where the serial number is stamped on a series 3) are also interchangeable it can be very hard to identify a box properly. The gear levers were also different between six and four cylinder models as were the bell housings which may explain the different seeming angle on the levers you have. Check if the bell housing has different positions for the bolts and it may explain a different lever.
