The builder is Bill Hayfield the bloke that owned Paintman panels, I believe he sold the business.
He also built the LandRover centre steer prototype replica

I can't find much on google either . here is his facebook Log in to Facebook

    Hello All,

What is the more flexible way to go regarding Australian Design Rules between a Series III chassis and a Discovery 1 chassis if building a hot rod?

The advantage of the Discovery 1 chassis is that it has nice things like independent coil suspension, disc brakes and improved steering whereas the Series III chassis does not. However, does the Discovery 1 chassis come with a load of anti-pollution, impact resistance, ABS blah - blah design regulations that the Series III does not?

Without the restriction of the original Land Rover design physical positioning of a firewall and associated footwells could the Series III chassis be converted to the nice features of the Discovery 1 such as coil suspension and disc brakes, steering? The advantage of this is that the anti-pollution and other design characteristics of the Series III chassis would carry over to the rest of the vehicle not the later Discovery 1 regulations. The suggested power-plant is a Range Rover Classic 3.5 litre V8 - roughly the same age as the Series III chassis. Gearbox would be LT95 as fitted to the Range Rover Classic 3.5 Litre V8

    Kind regards
    Lionel

D1 has Live axles , very much not independent suspension. I believe Independent started on the D3.

There are a few LandRover Series 2 bodies getting around on 2WD Hilux chassis .

If your fitting a Series3 body to a D1 chassis you must have the ADR safety related items from the D1 such as burst proof door locks, collapsible steering column, soft dash, etc etc and ABS / TC (if the D1 had it)

the earlier the chassis the easier it is going to be,

Rules have recently changed / changing in Victoria. The vehicle can now be registered according to Body year rather than Chassis year.

Here's one I made in about 1985 , Series 2 body on cut down RRC chassis.

    Hello GoingBush,

Thank you for confirming that the earlier the chassis the easier the ADR to comply with. I was partially correct regarding the coil springs on the D1 as opposed to leaf springs on the Series. While I was incorrect about the independent aspect.

Hmmm ... I spotted the comment about 'cut down RRC chassis'...

I am at the very early concept stage and at the steep end of the learning curve in relation to custom vehicles. My earlier approach was that while I was studying I bought different vehicles so I could build up a spare parts source. So now that the studies are over I have spare time and a store of available parts. I have a number of restoration projects - full rivet counter ones. However, after all my study I would now just like to have some fun and make any mistakes on a vehicle that does not have historic significance.

It seems that logical that it would be much easier to keep my spare Series III chassis on hand and base the custom project off a Range Rover Classic chassis. Now I just need to go hunting and find one. I have secured a complete 3.5 Litre V8 motor and a fully attached LT95.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

I have been toying with the idea of giving the current very early concept plan a slight tweak to the side by using a full length RRC chassis instead of a 109 Series III chassis. Even though I do not currently have a RRC chassis and I do have some Series III chassis. The RRC chassis would make be an upgrade of a Series III ride characteristics and fitting an original engine back to where it belongs would make things a lot easier. Ponder .... Ponder.

In your 2A body and cut down RRC chassis still maintain the 3.5 V8 and what happened to the project?

    Kind regards

article from LRO explains a bit about it. (cheesy I know, I was still wet behind the ears)

I sold it after about 5 years , included ad from LROCV magazine. The bastard that bought it never transferred the rego but stole my identity & changed the mailing address to his house, Then ran up $5000 of speeding red-light & parking fines , & I got issued with warrant , (which was subsequently transferred to him) I cancelled the rego , the Sheriff seized the car from his address & it went to auction where I had cash to buy it back . But the ***** paid the fine & took the car , but he could never get it re- registered & I later heard it was dismantled .

    Hello Going Bush,

Thank you for posting the Land Rover tourer photo. I tried finding its source via Google Images Search and the results ranged from a Citroën Type C to a Bugatti 59 Sports, or an Austin. Can you please post the source of the photograph? Thank you.

    Kind regards
    Lionel
