    Tailboard chain sleeve

I'm about to make some chain sleeves (330422) as my Series III SWB has pieces of bike innertubes which are OK but look like a temporary fix (which they were).

Each chain has two sleeves, maybe so it hangs better ? Anyway some dimensions & a photo would help if someone still has an original sleeve.
I'll go and look at my Series I later because it still has sleeves but I'm not sure if they are original.

    Thanks,

Here's a couple of pics of my trailer chains, originally a 109 ex army.
The longs are about 11 1/2 and the short 4 1/2 to five.

I simply made a tube by sewing a tube out of canvas the full length of the chain less a link each end. The originals were a single tube, but tend to rub through where the chain touches the bottom of the tub. The single tube is neater and quieter in my opinion.

Originals were made from an imitation leather material, but I think canvas similar to that used on the top is better and more durable.

Never been an issue here, but then I live inland. A small hole on the bottom would drain it, without losing the advantage of the stiffness of the tube stopping (well, reducing) the movement of the chains, which, while not a major source of noise, does wear through the paint.

    Thanks for your replies gentlemen.

Harry - Your sleeves look like tubing that's been added at a later date (like the bicycle inner tube on my Series III) rather than vinyl or leathercloth/Rexine.
BSF - I hadn't thought about the gathering of water inside a single sleeve, interesting point to consider.
JDNSW - Both my series II & III manuals list them as part number 330422 and 4 are required. Maybe Australian production used a single sleeve ?

Looks like I'll make something up and see how it goes.

Hi Gromit, i bought 8 of these the other day and fitted 4 to my s3. They fit well and seem to do the job well. The pics should show you all you need. As you can see in the last pic the internal or stock part number starts with a G so its a genuine part. The material is just black vinyl so its easy to acquire. I THINK the reason they are in two parts is the chain gets trapped when you close the tailgate when its in a single piece but in two pieces the chain doesnt get trapped. Hope this helps.

    Cheers Rod

    Hello from Sherwood.

Yes, on a ute they can and do occasionally fill with water. The simple solution for DYI is to put a brass eyelet at the bend point before sewing it up.

Incidentally, unless you specifically want the 'look' a length of plastic hose will do just as good a job as vinyl, canvass etc. Had it on my box trailer for more than ten years without perishing.

    Cheers,

    G'day Colin,

These are the chain sleeves on my 66 2A swb.

They are made out of the seat elephant hide material and were fitted when I bought the vehicle in 1974.

The dimensions are 1 5/8" wide and 19 1/2" long. They are in one piece and a tight fit on the chain.
