Piano Hinge ??
found this surfing the net..........seems a bit more user friendly than a drop down tail gate but not sure how it was done

A quick google throws up lots of picture but personally, I'm not sure it's a better solution. The drop down is handy to sit on and also have a brew/cook lunch. The upper section gives a little protection from the rain
With a hardtop you could just fit a wagon single piece rear door ?
Anyway, hinges seem to be the wagon rear door type (like the Series II door hinges).
Anyone coverted tailgate to side opening? - Defender Forum - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

Side opening definitely more passenger friendly

All you need is a step that comes down automatically as you lower the flap......

I made mine like the wagon.
Used a RHS door and made up the doortop.

My Series 3 88" was converted to nearly exactly this setup, had the door hinges where this pic shows but used a standard tailgate latch to secure it. The PO had done it for ease of passenger access into the rear (he had kids). it seemed to work well, and I've thought about putting it back to that configuration however the drop down tailgate serves me well for camping (my series is a play toy that goes 4x4ing and camping - is not a daily drive) I use the tailgate as my table/bench/kitchen. I have one of those little 1.4m awnings at the back to give shade.
yep prefer the drop down myself as well.
but would definitely could have advantages depending on the layout you have in the rear etc
the drop down is so handy when you pull up for a cuppa or brunch on the side of the road...
mines even bowed just right so the old dual fuel Coleman sits in it snug as a bug...
had the swing away on the county and the 2 door defender and constantly missed the drop down.

I did the same thing to the SWB trailer I built. It was useful for the stove to hang off.
