    Crank Handle

Was wondering are there different lengths of crank handles for Landies. I have a front pto winch on my Series 3 SWB which means the standard crank handle is about 3 inches too short to start the engine. Has anyone lengthened a crank handle or will one from another model e.g. forward control, defender etc be longer?
    Cheers,

I reckon you'll find that a crank handle can come in many lengths. The rod thickness, the depth of the tee and the length of the tee pieces are all that matter. For example, the 20/24 HP, the 25/30 HP and the Phantom III Rolls Royce cars my uncle owned all took the same handle, but the one for the "Twenty" was a little short for the Phantom. Any one of them would break your arm if you didn't know how to use them, though.

Can't help but I have a cut down one for my Series I with Capstan winch because you have to engage the winch and use a starter dog on the front. Possibly this was another 'standard option' if you fitted a capstan ?
Otherwise I think all of mine are the same length but I'll check.

Maybe put up some dimensions and someone might have a longer one. I'm sure someone will want to compare 'crank handle' lengths, I'm told it's not important it's how you use it

Just checked and I have 4 which are the same. Approx 28" for the long part.

Yes, the short crank comes as part of the capstan winch kit. All others are the same length. Except for the tube handle, it would not be very difficult to make one from rod the correct diameter if you have a drill press and an oxy set for bending it. If you have a lathe and a suitable tube cutter to put the circumferential dent in the sleeve, making one of them would not be a big job. I don't think it needs to be anything other than mild steel.

On the other hand, if you have a welder and a bit of skill, extending an existing crank would not be a big job.

I had ten L/R crank handles, I cut them all down to make capstan winch types . I had sold & given away all bar one & had a friend wanting an original the other week so I gave him the last one along with what I had cut off it. He is going to weld it back together.
