Installing seals for steering relay with Hylomar

    Hi All,

I have the internals of my steering relay all together using the cable tie method, and now I want to put the end caps on.

I acquired double lip seals as other forum postings suggest, and I have also acquired a tube of Hylomar, blue goop in yellow tube / box.

I realise I should put Hylomar on the inside surface of the seals to mate with the shaft, but should I also put it on the outside of the seal as well, i.e. the surface that mates with the end caps ? The box says to apply it to both surfaces and wait for the solvent to evaporate, but then the stuff is not as fluid any more. Or should I just push the seals in with no Hylomar, "wet" Hylomar, "dry" Hylomar, some oil or nothing at all to help it seat in the end caps ?

BTW I bought a new old stock genuine shaft, so the shaft surfaces that mate with the seals are smooth as, so maybe I shouldn't even bother with the Hylomar ?

    Any advice appreciated.

    Cheers,
    John

John, Hylomar is a sealant or gasket replacement. If u use it on seal rubbing surfaces it will damage the seal. Its ok to use it on the outer surfaces of the seal if u feel u need to but i personally always install seals dry with a light smear of grease on the lip surfaces for lubrication. I would only use the hylomar to help seal the top and bottom plate gaskets.

    Cheers Rod

Thanks Rod, obviously I was completely on the wrong track with the seals. I have new paper gaskets from a rebuild kit, but I made a new one for the bottom out of thicker gasket material as the relay housing had some pitting on the bottom.

I'll put some grease on the seal as you suggest and reassemble on the weekend and fill it with oil and see how it goes for leaks.

    Cheers,
    John

    Hi John.
I tend to use a smear of 515 on all sides of paper gaskets.
I use it on my cars, motorbikes and Fergy Tractor.

LOCTITE 515 - Methacrylate gasketing product - Loctite

Don't forget to coat relay internal wall and 4 split bushes well in EP90 before reassemble. It take quite a while to fill with oil also.
I had mine in the vice with top seal cover off. Filled over hr or two, until it came in view. Top cover on.
    Don't overfill.
