    Gas bonnet struts for series

    Anyone done this?
I find now with a bullbar fitted I am finding it hard to lift the bonnet with a spare wheel on it.
The bullbar keeps one standing too far away to get decent leverage without doing more damage to my back.
Thinking of investigating the strut option.

Great idea Keith, I will have one if you find a solution.

    Effort?

    Hello from Brisbane.

I would imagine that finding a strut(s) that is reasonably compact and would willingly lift a bonnet with a spare wheel attached will be a fair challenge.

I'm sure it has been thought about before, but haven't come across a successful application in my travels.

Might be more of a block and tackle job. Where's Heath Robinson when you need him.......?

    Cheers,

I would think that if you go gas strut, you will need two if you are lifting a wheel on the bonnet
Struts r us are good at sorting the angles and strut pressures

UES has struts that will do the job, and will mail them to you when you know what you want.

You can calculate the length, diameter, force and position of the struts by searching 'strut calculation'
    Here's an example.

    Gas Strut Calculation

Weighing the bonnet and spare can be done with bathroom scales resting on a piece of ply or similar.
You'll probably have to reinforce the area where the struts mount to both the guard and the bonnet due to the force required to lift the spare and bonnet from two points.
