Advice sought on removing ball bearing at top of outer steering column

    Hi All,

I got stuck into my steering box on the weekend, and luckily it all seems to be in good condition with little or no wear on the spiral, main nut or rocker bush. I have a late series 2a, so I have the bearing at the top of the steering column

The refurb kit I bought from Paddocks includes a replacement bearing at the top of the steering column, but I can't figure out how to remove the old one, and the various workshop manuals don't offer any clues.

Can anyone suggest a method of removal please ?

    Thanks
    John

I used a piece of tubing that slid nicely up inside.
Held the column tube and tapped Tubing on the ground.
I popped the new on in the freezer for 15 minutes before tapping into place with a Nylon/rubber mallet.
Has been some comments on LR forums about some of the After market ones not being the correct OD, and to big.
Also check fitment on the shaft before fitting into column.
If you have these, give old and new a quick measure.

I ended up getting a genuine NOS from Blanchard LR, UK.
I have bee thinking about some sort of dust cover, for the top of the bearing, as they appear to quite often fail.

Is there anything wrong with the existing bearing ? If not put the new bearing into stock don't change it just because you have a new one.
The replacement is likely to be of lower quality anyway.

Point taken Colin, I guess the bearing in there at the moment is ok, it just wobbles a bit, mind you so does the new one.

    Cheers,

Wobbling must be part of the specification the.

OK, I'll just grease mine a bit and leave it in place.

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    John
