Am not sure of offset of 5 inch Series 3 rims. However, regarding the 5'5 inch wide 272309 rims used as standard on LWB Series 2's and also a 5 inch one presumably of some early SWB, the side of the rim is effectively the same distance from the chassis as Disco 1 steel rims.
Checked this with three bare rims lying side by size on concrete and measuring distance up to flanges. Extra width is on outside. Note that presently I have a dead 2 door Disco 1 here. So far is still a rolling chassis. (Anyone need a 3.9 V8 that should still run OK?) Was problem with legal tread tubeless tyres leaking around bead. Will have tubes put in for use on another D1. Meanwhile wheels on it are from a 1961 LWB Series 2 with worn out recaps and tubes which don't leak.
Re the Series 2 which I acquired from a deceased relative's estate, it now has good tyres on 6'5 inch wide "Wolf" steel rims as used for maybe 20 years on Defender 130's and by the military. Would not want to put standard rims back or use Disco 1 rims on it. Re the latter, am not sure of change in offset if centres are cut out and welded back reversed as have seen reports about on aulro. The important advantage of using Wolfs is the poor turning circle of Series LRs can be considerably improved. The inside of them sits about an inch further out from the chassis than other rims mentioned here. Steering lock stops on swivel housings are normally adjusted to stop tyre on inside of turn rubbing on chassis. With 7'50X16's on Wolf rims, tyres still just clear chassis with stops screwed right back. Limiting factor is then travel in steering box - although of course linkages should be adjusted so lock is the same each side. About as far as desirable for the swivel housings anyway.
