Fitting to the tailgate is fine. There is a factory number plate holder that is hinged so the plate swings down when the gate is lowered.
Quick question -
Is it legal to attach the number plate to the tail gate in QLD?
Just wondering about the possibility of driving with the tailgate down, and therefore the plate would not be in view. When they were new (1958), where was the plate mounted?
It’s frustrating that a standard number plate will not fit to the side...

Fit what early Rangies had - a hinged drop down numberplate holder so the car could be driven with the tailgate down.

All Australian assembled Series Landrovers (almost all, anyway) had a swing down plate holder and light that was riveted to the tailgate. You should be able to find one from someone who wrecks Series Landrovers, e.g. Ho Hars.

Thank you all, that clears it up perfectly.
I don't plan on driving at all with the tail gate down, although e.g. bringing something large home from Bunnings etc might necessitate that...
More concerned with the legal technicalities come rego time.
Also, I already have a personalized plate which comes in a very sturdy aluminium frame so there will be no trimming to be done...
I do have a homemade plate and light holder that fits on the tail gate but it's not hinged. I think I might have to find an old hinged item.
Jim, check your PM's.
Not sure about interstate, but here in SA it is governed by the motor vehicles act. You can place it where you like...as long as, it is no higher than a certain height off the ground....and can be viewed from any point within a 180deg arc, when standing no closer than 3metres to the car, I think it was. Going off the top of my head, but it is something like that, you would find it in your local laws.
Must be legible at all times, even if the vehicle is loaded. Here's the Qld rule:
TRANSPORT OPERATIONS (ROAD USE MANAGEMENT--VEHICLE REGISTRATION) REGULATION 2010 - REG 30
Position, visibility and legibility of number plate
