Red lever is 4WD low range.
Yellow lever is 4WD high range. Push down yellow gives you 4WD high range, to take it out of 4WD high, you have to move the red lever to 4WD low range and back to normal, or stay in 4WD low range if desired.

Possibly I'm having a bit of a seniors moment here, but I'm finding this confusing
On my vehicle if I push in yellow knob in high it stays down, change to low and it pops up
Question......... how do I select 4WD in low range or is low range 4WD by default ?
Cheers Paul
Red lever is 4WD low range.
Yellow lever is 4WD high range. Push down yellow gives you 4WD high range, to take it out of 4WD high, you have to move the red lever to 4WD low range and back to normal, or stay in 4WD low range if desired.
Gordie...... just to clarify if I select low range with red lever I'm automatically in 4WD without having to depress yellow knob?
Cheers Paul
Yes Paul, that is it. Both of those levers activate 4WD, one is just high and one is low. If the yellow is 'up' and the red is 'forward', you are in 2wd.
Pulling the red lever backwards activates low 4wd. You will notice that if you had the yellow one pushed down for high 4wd, it pops up when you activate the red lever.
As Gordie says - Low range is always four wheel drive, high range is two wheel drive by default with four wheel drive selected by pushing down the yellow knob. Go back to two wheel drive in high range by stopping and selecting low range and back to high range with the red knob.
And a word of caution if you have free wheel hubs. If the hubs are unlocked, do not engage four wheel drive while moving, or it will make a horrible noise and you are likely to break something. Even if you engage it while stopped, use low range with caution, as it is a good way of breaking axles.
Why would you want to use four wheel drive with the hubs unlocked?
In high range, it offers a way to lubricate the top swivel bush as an alternative to getting out to lock the hubs.
In low range, good as a creeper gear on hard surfaces for careful manoeuvring, for example, hooking up or backing a trailer.

Thanks for answers, John I got rid of free wheeling hubs during rebuild couldn't see the use of them.
Cheers Paul
Sometimes, someone has to ask to dumb questions, thanks for that Paul...![]()
