I'll write something up tonight, but when Molybdenumsulfide is activated it is considered a boundary layer regime of lubrication.
Oil and grease rely on hydrodynamic lubrication to keep rotating or sliding bits apart.
Actually I'll cut and paste an article from Loaded 4x4 that describes how and why solid lubricants like moly actually work.
Perhaps worthwhile pointing out that the properties of the metal which are used in alloys for things such as gunbarrels and armour are unrelated to the properties of the sulphide that are useful as a lubricant.
