Design Feature that Causes Rust to Bulkheads - How to Upgrade?

    Hello All,

I have to replace the bulkhead in my 2A ambulance. In the ambulance not only the foot-wells have been eaten away - the main structural external frame that forms the sides of the bulkhead are eaten away. I am aware of one of the previous owners did a lot of beach work and was not too keen on preventative maintenance. Yes this is an extreme case.

I noticed that bulkheads in some of the other spares vehicles were also in various stages of decay when I first got them. However, even in one of my most cared for vehicles I was shocked to see recently that the inside sheet metal is starting to form rust bubbles from near floor level. The sheet metal is covering the main frame of the bulkhead.

What aspect of the bulkhead and windscreen design is the culprit at initiating a downward spiral that rusts away bulkheads?

Is there a lack of drainage holes or some feature of the bulkhead design that forms a breeding ground for rust?

Can this design be modified during repairs and installation to prevent further bouts of tin-worm taking up residence?

What things should be checked regularly for prevention and routine maintenance? What treatments can be carried out - such as fish oil?

    Kind regards
    Lionel

The problem is any box section or double skinned section is difficult to treat against rust.
It could be condensation forming on the inside, water getting in from top (or bottom) or water not getting out.
The windscreen seal as it decays would allow water to sit between frame & bulkhead, the vent seals could trap water as they come unstuck or break down.

On door frames & door tops I seal all but one hole, tip some paint inside the frame & roll around to ensure coverage & then drain. I hope this will hold the rust back.

'A' pillar and around the vents would be the fact that its boxed in. Once the rust is cut out and the repairs made you should get some paint and/or fish oil (or similar cavity wax) into all the enclosed sections.
Floor panels take a lot of stone damage and are sprayed with water when it rains so maybe an rubberised underseal to protect them. Sometimes underseal can hide rust so maybe a decent coat of paint and regular checks & touch ups is a better alternative for floor panels.

All of mine have been OK with just some minor rust damage. Maybe they were garaged ? I have a bulkhead from a '55 Series I that came from a car that sat in a field for about 20 years, the only rust is in one small double skinned section.

The other thing you can do to minimise rust in the bulkhead is to move inland, and preferably further south!

Otherwise, pretty much as Colin says, but I would add a couple of points. Keep the vehicle under cover as much as possible, and use it regularly - the engine heat will dry out the bulkhead to a significant extent.

And hose the mud off and avoid beach work.

    Hello John,

Yes, the sub tropical status of Bundaberg, and its coastal location is a contributing factor to corrosion. Well not so much in the way of rain over the past months. The soil is dry and cracking. The main ground cover colour is brown at the moment and it crackles when walked over.

Then again, the grass does not need mowing every fortnight like it will during the peak of summer here. It would be nice to see the place green again though.

    Kind regards

Hi Lionel, when i found a rust free bulkhead for my s2a "Betsy", i had it sandblasted and then i painted it olive drab. I turned the bulkhead upside down and hung it from my garage roof and litterally sprayed heaps of fishoil into every crevice and box section, inside every joint and hole i could find and left it for a couple days. Its amazing where that stuff gets into. It even seems to travel uphill oozing out of seams and joints everywhere. I then, after a few days, turned it right way up hanging it on the windscreen mounts and let what was left, drain out. Then i sprayed more into as many places i could find and left it to drain out. Even 6 months after doing this it was still seeping out of some seams. Its been sitting now for a couple years but before im ready to install it i will give it the same treatment again. I dont think ill have a bulkhead rust problem for a few years. There are good bulkheads out there to be found. Good luck.

    Cheers Rod
