    Spare tyre well

    Hi All,

I know series landies use a few places to store the spare tyre, i.e. bonnet, in tub behind seats, but I have also seen pics where the spare is kept inside the tub on one side in a "well".

On my tub, the holes where the well would be just have covers riveted on.

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy a well for the spare type to store it in the tub that way ?

    Thanks
    John

The kit also included fastenings/fixings to secure the wheel to the tub side capping.

P/N for the well 330602 and the fixings 347463 & 347464 plus bolts washers & retainers.

I'd be surprised to learn that you could still purchase the setup.

The alternatives for getting one may now be limited to either purchasing a tub with one fitted, or building it from scratch by copying the sheetmetal work from another tub.

I'm guessing that external storage for the spare may have become more popular due to ease of access and the fact that, on replacement, a used/damaged spare would soil whatever gear was being carried in the tub.

Another factor affecting popularity may have been that many owners now fit tyres that are too wide for this OME setup.

Can you just remove the covers and see if the tyre fits?

    Here's the well...330602 - Spare Wheel Well Rear Body 109 and 110

Then you have to source the mounting kit, I didn't look on Craddocks but they probably have the parts.

My Series 2 LWB with ute body has well, etc for spare tyre on right side and patch over where it would be presumably installed on left hand drive vehicles. From many years of farm use, the latter has become rather beat about downwards. Have drilled rivets out, done some straightening of it and put aluminium sheet patch back with about half a dozen 3/16 inch roofing bolts. Thinking would be a good idea to replace this with another well off a wreck which would be handy to cart another spare or if expedient considering other items being carted to carry spare on the left side. However, maybe more importantly, a well is something to help pull the depressed bent area straight and keep it that way. ie Using it for strengthening.
