SIIa Gerbox into an SIII thoughts....

    Gents,

Young bloke has a 1976 SIII with a dodgy 3rd gear. Can anyone confirm if a SIIA gearbox will work as a direct replacement? I realise there are a few differences such as the lack of Syncro in 3rd and 4th and that the starter is in a different place. The hope is to stick it directly onto the existing bell housing.

I should mention that the SII is running a Ford Xflow engine but im guessing (Hoping) that the flywheel on it has been converted to mate with a standard SIII main shaft.

    Appreciate any thoughts

    Cheers

    Ian

    2A box stronger

Hi, I have always been told the 11A box was stronger than the 111 and thus particularly a better way to go with the more powerful motor, I have used behind P76 V8 without drama.

A Series3 box is stronger and a much better box IMO , the Layshaft on a Series 2A has stress risers but the Series 3 layshaft with integral gears & is a much beefier chunk of metal.

Fitting a 2A box into a 3 requires replumbing the hydraulics as the Slave cylinder is on the other side in a bugger of a position if you ask me, tho some people prefer the Series 1-2-2A throw out mechanism. I'll take a Series3 box over a 2A any day. Also be aware theres no synchro on 1st & 2nd .

if your 2A has been behind a crossflow its going to need a rebuild anyway, - esp if you want it to be dependable. Both boxes are dead easy to rebuild why don't you put a kit through the 3 , probably get away with a bearings & synchro spring clips.

The gearboxes are fully interchangeable, but you have to change the clutch release mechanism and pressure plate as well. S3 clutch is on the LH side, S2a is on the right, and quite different setup.

Also note that while the six and four gearboxes are functionally identical, the bell housing differs - this is a difference between engines, not between 3 and 2a. For completeness, the diesel and four cylinder petrol boxes are the same, and the V8/Isuzu box is different to all of them, but you probably knew that.

And the boxes are fully interchangeable from S1 to end S2a, but again, the bell housing changed between the 2l S1 engine and the S2 engine.

Although these boxes are all interchangeable, there were changes right through production, mostly improvements. Ratios changed slightly as well, but when 1st in the main box changed, so did low range, to keep the overall maximum reduction the same. High range did not change.

I think that summarises it, but I'm sure I'll be corrected if I got anything wrong.

    Thanks Goingbush,

Rebuilding was the first option, the kits from Syncro Gearboxes look pretty comprehensive, it was only due to an apparently rebuilt SII gearbox becoming available we considered that option. Probably worth doing the Xfer case at the same time, I'd imagine additional parts will be needed as the third gear shakes like the proverbial dog.

Splitting the box I'm sure will reveal all!
