    I read that where the driver sat depended on which side the brake lever was mounted.

    More likely the brake lever location was determined by the customary side of the vehicle for the driver in the place the vehicle was built. But worth noting that many horsedrawn (and bullock drawn) vehicles had no type of brake whatever. Coming to a downhill section of road meant chaining a log or other suitable drag to the back.

    I know it's not related to the original meaning of the term*, but I have always helped myself remember by thinking of cricket bats rather than swords. As a right-handed batsman, facing down the pitch, I know where the offside is......

    P.S. Boy, I am really enjoying this thread about Land Rover Series III Games.

    * Or maybe it is...................

    To the O.P: buy the S2A and paint it yellow. Best of both worlds...
    To John: why does the PIC in a fixed wing sit in the port seat and in a helicopter in the starboard seat?

    The convention of PIC in the LH seat in fixed wing is almost certainly a left over from when France was the home of aviation before WW1, although the strength of the US sector post DC3 might have overturned it if it was not already that way.

    As to why helicopters have gone the opposite way, I really don't know. I suspect it is because that is how it was set up in the first successful helicopters (Sikorsky R-4). Or possibly the first widely used helicopter (Bell 47), but why they were set up that way I don't know. Perhaps because fitting dual controls with the cyclic in front of the pilot meant a shared collective could be between the seats, and operation of this with the left hand was preferred. But this is purely a guess.

    I have a photo of a loaded 6 horse wagon on the way to the Adelaide Plains, with a Foot brake. No handbrake at all.

    I can only guess that the foot brake was locked on with a ratchet when stationary. Just like a Series 2A.

    Not necessarily - most coach and wagon stopping places were pretty level so there was not a lot of load on horses or bullocks getting started. And chocks, even if just a suitable rock, would have been widely used.

    Looking back with a mind conditioned by motoring.
