All things being equal - take the Game.
Hi All
I am contemplating the purchase of a Series Land Rover.
I have found a very nice S2a 88” and a good original S3 Game. Both are around the same $$ and both are interstate.
From my research there were around 350 Games made in Australia, this is relatively rare machine. It appears to have all original parts including ID & build plates. There are a few dings and could do with a tidy up.
The S2a is very tidy having been restored, or partially restored.
Thoughts please.
Regards Craig

this may be of interest: Land Rover GAME – Leyland Australia's take on an upmarket Series III
Strangely, I can clearly remember in the very early 80s a customer with a V8 Game. I can never seem to find any references to that car now.

My personal preference would be the S2a, but the Game has the advantage from the collector's point of view that it is rarer, albeit newer, and from the driver's point of view that it has synchromesh on all gears.
But all else equal, the 2a is likely to have a greater long term value, simply because the market is much larger - the Game is only (or mainly) attractive to Australians.
The 2a is likely to have been better built - some things, including steel quality, seem to have gone downhill under Leyland, and there is a lot more plastic on the Game. Against that, I think the Game had high back seats that are definitely more comfortable.

There is an image of a Game in my Profile that just appeared one day in the Friends list. (I think I suggested he Subscribe to AUILRO a few years ago so that may have been him. He rebuilt my S2A Gearbox for me as a friendly favour..
The crowd he worked for, Wottons, were Land Rover Dealers in the Adelaide Hills.
The only bloke I knew who desperately wanted a Game lived in the Adel. Hills I hadn't seen him for yonks.
Was talking to a local bloke a couple of years ago & discovered the Owner had died from Cancer so who knows where his Game went on his death? Same bloke really yonks ago, loaded up his S1 with gear & his family every 2 years or so & drove over to Perth long before a good road was built. Camped along the way I believe. How they all fitted into a S1 80" Truck cab I have no idea. but they did.
No idea if it is still in the family but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

No idea if the Game or the S1 is still in the family but I wouldn't be surprised if they were.
BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER. Double Post. Could a Mod remove the first post #6 please?
As others have mentioned, the Game has a potentially higher resale value because it's a limited edition. One on here a while back was sold to someone in the US, they would love the fact that it was unique to Australia. I'm sure there would also be a market in the UK as well.
You need to work out why you are buying it....is it an investment or are you going to actually use it ?
I own a Defender Tanami, also a limited edition. Is it worth more than a Defender of similar age & condition ?? It has some accessories fitted by Land Rover and a sticker pack. The Game is similar but at least they are uniquely numbered (Land Rover couldn't even tell me how many Tanami's had been sold).
You mention that the IIa is tidy & possibly partly restored, this might mean much less to be spent on it before it gets back on the road (might !). What condition is the Game in ?
As John mentioned, is the synchro on all 4 gears important to you ? That could steer the decision one way or another although a later box can be fitted to the IIa with a few modifications.
You say it's a IIa, are the lights in the front panel or in the wings. If headlamps are in the front panel then decision made.....get the IIa
